Escalating the state’s showdown with the Trump administration over illegal immigration, California Gov. Jerry Brown used a Christmas holiday tradition to grant pardons Saturday to two men who were on the verge of being deported for committing crimes while in the U.S. Brown, pairing his state’s combative approach to federal immigration authorities with his belief in the power of redemption, characterized the pardons as acts of mercy. The Democratic governor moved as federal officials in recent months have detained and deported immigrants with felony convictions that resulted in the loss of their legal residency status, including many with nonviolent offenses that occurred years ago. With the pardons, the reason for applicants’ deportations may be eliminated, said attorney Kevin Lo of Asian Americans Advancing Justice-Asian Law Caucus, which represented some of the men in a recent class-action lawsuit. President Trump and his family are staying at Mar-a-Lago resort in West Palm Beach, Florida this Christmas. While on holiday, they decided they wanted to do something extra to spread some Christmas cheer. Trump and Melania decided to talk to children around the country who were calling the NORAD hotline to speak to Santa. President Trump talked to six children and Melania talked to nine from the living room of a Mar-a-Lago suite before heading off to their family dinner. “What would you like more than anything? Building blocks, that’s what I’ve always liked, too. I always loved building blocks … well I predict Santa will bring you building blocks, so many you won’t be able to use them all.” One child who called the hotline asked Santa for his grandmother to get out of the hospital for Christmas. “So you want your grandma to get out of the hospital? Many Americans were disappointed by the latest statements from actor Tom Hanks. He went against President Trump by  refusing  his invitation to screen his new movie “The Post” at the White House. WASHINGTON —The Trump administration has approved a plan to provide lethal weapons to Ukraine, U.S. officials said Friday, aiming to fortify the former Soviet republic military as it fights separatists backed by Russia. The new arms include American-made Javelin anti-tank missiles that Ukraine has long sought to boost its defenses against tanks that have rolled through eastern Ukraine during violence that has killed more than 10,000 since 2014. The FBI has said it found a martyrdom letter and several guns in the home of a former marine who said he wanted to carry out a Christmas Day attack on a popular San Francisco tourist destination. Everitt Aaron Jameson (26), a tow-truck driver, was charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organisation. Jameson told an undercover agent who he believed to be associated with senior leadership of the Islamic State group that he wanted to conduct a violent attack on Pier 39 in San Francisco because it was heavily crowded, according to an FBI affidavit. He told the undercover agent that Christmas Day would be “the perfect day to commit the attack” and that he “did not need an escape plan because he was ready to die”, according to the affidavit.
